A Spanish solider died and two others were injured following a road accident in Mali, the Spanish Ministry of Defense confirmed on Friday.
The solider, who was named as 27-year-old Antonio Carrero Jimenez, died when the vehicle he was traveling in together with three other people went off the road shortly before 9 a.m. Spanish time, at a place called Somadougou, 40 kilometers from Sevare in central Mali.
The body of Carrero Jimenez and the two injured soldiers were taken to Koulikoro, where the majority of Spanish troops currently serving in the country are based.
Spanish Defense Minister Maria Dolores de Cospedal also published a tweet in which she expressed “pain and sadness” for the death and sent “condolences and affection to his family and companions.”
Spanish currently has 292 troops stationed in Mali as part of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) in Mali, which aims to train and advise the Mali armed forces.
The first mandate for this mission opened in February 2013 and the current (third) mandate is due to conclude at the end of the current month.
