Windstorm kills 6, injures 5 in northern Nigeria

A windstorm in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Katsina has wreaked havoc, killing six and injuring five others, according to local officials on Friday.
At least 500 houses were destroyed following the windstorm late Thursday, Aminu Waziri, head of the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency, said.
An Army Barracks and Air Force Base in the Katsina metropolis were also affected by the disaster, Waziri said.
At least 53 houses and an elementary school were destroyed in the Army Barracks, while about 100 houses were also affected at the air force base, he added.
The local government in Katsina has described the incident as a “natural disaster beyond human control,” saying officials had been sent to the affected areas to assess the extent of damage with a view to providing relief to the victims.
Last month, at least 444 houses were destroyed in three local government areas of Katsina resulting from a windstorm.
