Nigeria ready for African Athletics Championship

Nigeria is ready to host the 2018 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Championships, an official said Tuesday.
Solomon Ogba, chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) told Xinhua that 52 African countries would be participating in the competition, which opens on Wednesday in the southern city of Asaba, in Delta State.
Ogba said many foreign journalists had arrived to cover the event, adding that adequate security measures had been put in place to ensure the smooth running of the tournament.
“We have provided world-class medical facilities to take care of any health emergencies that may arise during the championship. The event will be aired live and there will be daily musical entertainment,” he said.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, CAA President Hamad Malboum lauded the state government for its efforts in completing the stadium and equipping it with state of the art facilities for the competition.
Earlier, state governor Ifeanyi Okowa said the stadium remained a legacy for the people.
He added that sports occupied an important position within the state, adding that Asaba is a peaceful city and that people are free to enjoy various tourism activities in the area.
The African Championships will be held between August 1 and August 5.
