People watch 109 hours of porn to help scientists create robot that sucks d*ck

The year is 2018 and scientists have a lot on their plate. From fighting cancer and life-threatening climate change, their plates are full and the tank is empty. And yet, because these folk are superhuman in their intelligence and pioneering desires, they somehow still manage to find time to focus on the priorities. Like the blowjob.
Introducing the Autoblow AI, a sex toy made for those possessing a penis that consists of a rubbery sleeve and a motor housed inside a canister that aims to stimulate oral sex. Despite just launching its Indiegogo campaign last week, the campaign has already hit its target of $50,000 demonstrating clearly that sex does indeed sell.
Whilst 2014 saw the original creation of the Autoblow 2, this is the new and improved model and features a machine learning algorithm that “continually changes technique” in order to pleasure the user in new and exciting ways.
So, instead of repetitive, mechanical motions, this “AI mode” promises to replicate the nuanced and unpredictable motions of a real, human blowjob. But in order to do this, the company had to ask a team of six people to watch and annotate 109 hours of porn. They even hired machine-learning engineers to create a model to take all that data and translate it into what the toy does. The entire process took three years.
What came of all this data? The Blowjob Paper which, it’s safe to say, is not a peer-reviewed source. The study is full of sexually-themed algorithmic research. The paper begins with the clear desire to “quantify the ‘common’ or ‘typical’ movements involved in oral sex performed on males.”
As it continues, they declare: “To do so, we analyse a dataset containing over 108 hours of pornographic video, annotated at each frame with the position of the lips along the shaft of the penis. We use quantisation techniques to discover sixteen distinct motions and using these motions we design and evaluate a system that procedurally generates realistic movements sequences using deep learning.”
But just how does one scientists with the dream to equip males with a toy for blowjob pleasure at their fingertips, actually approach others with the idea of helping to create a jerkoff machine?
Brian Sloan, creator of Autoblow AI, told Motherboard, “I told them I make a sex toy for men focusing on recreating the blowjob experience, and asked if they could use AI to study what really happens during blowjobs, so that I could make my machine give blowjobs like a human.”
“That was enough to cause seven companies to tell me almost immediately that the ‘work was not for them’. When I asked why, they didn’t want to talk about why,” he added.
But, thankfully (for Sloan at least), a company did finally agree and the Blowjob Paper was produced, costing Sloan just $30,000. Hilariously, despite the work and research that went into it, the authors wanted to remain anonymous. There’s no research team to credit, no institution claiming responsibility for the work, not even a scientist’s name.
The research team was comprised of six individuals tasked with collecting blowjob data from watching porn. These were not statistics or machine-learning experts, just friends and confidants willing to help with an absurd task. They created a system for annotating 109 hours of blowjob videos – 1,200 oral sex video clips in total – by animating a cartoon head and penis on a movable slider they could adjust with a mouse as they watched the porn videos.
Despite all the research and statistics behind it, let’s not forget: the Autoblow AI is just a plastic can with a silicone sleeve that goes up and down on your dick; words which, when articulated so clearly, sounds far less exciting than what your imagination may have conjured at the idea of the AI blowjob. That said, scientists are optimistic AI will help improve aspects of porn and sex toys.
“Sex toys are available basically across the developed world. Obviously people want these things, and they surely will get smarter as scientists and engineers like me do their job,” the scientists said.
“That’s the big picture. There are of course also technical upgrades we can do to the solution we built for this particular sex toy, like better procedural generation of the emulated blowjobs, and more stuff than just blowjobs. We found that recognising anal, for example, is totally doable.”
The future is shaping up to be an exciting – if not slightly sad – time.
