18 rescued from collapsed church building in Delta as 3 die

Eighteen persons have been so far rescued and an unknown number of people were still trapped under the rubble of a church building that collapsed in south Nigeria’s delta state Tuesday night, the police said Wednesday.

Also in the same incident, three people lost their lives when the two-story church building collapsed.

Bright Edafe, a spokesman for the police in the Delta state, told reporters at the scene of the incident that no death has been recorded so far after the church building caved in through the children section during a religious activity Tuesday night in Asaba, capital of the state.

According to Edafe, both children and adults have been so far rescued from the rubble, although some victims were still trapped. He did not reveal the figure of people trapped.

The rescued persons have been taken to a nearby health facility for treatment, he added.

Meanwhile, a search and rescue operation is still underway at the site of the incident.

Building collapses often occur in Nigeria, as some property owners and developers do not adhere strictly to planning and building laws and regulations. In most cases, heavy loads are placed on the building and substandard materials are often used in construction.
