G20: Xi meets Senegalese, South African presidents

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Senegalese President Macky Sall here Tuesday afternoon.

The Chinese leader also met at another sideline, the South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa at the ongoing G20 Summit in Indonesia.

   Xi pointed out that China and Senegal are important partners and co-chairs of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

   With the joint efforts of both sides, Xi said, China-Senegal and China-Africa relations have gained great progress, with deepened political mutual trust and fruitful results in practical cooperation.

   China will continue to follow the principle of sincerity, real results, amity and good faith and the principle of pursuing the greater good and shared interests, and enhance solidarity and cooperation with Senegal and other African countries, to jointly build a China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era, Xi said.

   China stands ready to continue joining hands with Senegal to forge ahead on the road of development and rejuvenation and support each other on issues of sovereignty, security and development interests, Xi said.

   Xi said that China will continue to support Senegal in building infrastructure such as roads and industrial parks, expand the import of agricultural products from Senegal, step up cooperation on the entire industrial chain of peanuts and on rice farming, and ensure implementation of the measures under the FOCAC framework, said the Chinese president.

   China and Senegal hold highly aligned positions on major issues such as safeguarding world peace and promoting common development, Xi said, adding China will work in solidarity and coordination with Senegal to jointly uphold international fairness and justice and the common interests of developing countries, and China actively supports the African Union in joining the Group of 20 (G20).

   President Sall once again extended warm congratulations to Xi on his re-election as general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), noting that the CPC is a great party with an exceptional history, and China is a widely respected great country that upholds principles, and a staunch and firm friend of African countries.

   China has always stood with Senegal and other African countries in agriculture, water conservancy, infrastructure, education, medical care and the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, said Sall.

   Sall also thanked China for its valuable help to Senegal and other African countries, and for being the first to publicly support the African Union in joining the G20.

   He said that African countries’ firm support for China in Xinjiang-related issues fully demonstrates the high-quality mutual trust and high-level of relations between Africa and China, adding that Senegal is satisfied with the progress of the FOCAC and stands ready to work with China to further promote cooperation under the FOCAC framework.

   Ding Xuexiang, Wang Yi and He Lifeng were present at the meeting.
