At least, 10 essential workers’ unions have sent out circulars urging their members to comply with the nationwide indefinite strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) with effect from Monday.
ACE Magazine is privy to the memos of the unions of electricity, aviation, medical, banks, and other financial institution workers to stay off work.
Others we got their compliance memos include the National Union of Petroleum and Gas Workers (NUPENG) which lifts petroleum products from depots, the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees.
The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, Nigeria Civil Service Union, and Nigerian Union of Railway Workers are not left out.
The aviation workers memo read partly “We are aware of your complaints and hardships being faced by all working-class people, but in spite of the masses’ outcry, the Federal Government did not reason to do the needful to pay acceptable wages.
In the light of the aforementioned, all ANAP members and indeed all aviation workers are hereby directed to stay away from work by midnight of Sunday, June 2 2024 as directed by both the NLC and the TUC till further notice.”
The electricity workers union memo directed members that “all national, state, and chapter executives are requested to start the mobilisation of our members in total compliance with this directive to ensure the government does the right thing as stated above.”
In a terse language, the health workers union memo of June 1 mandated all members and union leaders to “immediately commence intense mobilisation of our members for a total shutdown of all the health facilities in the country, commencing from 00.01 hours, 3rd June 2024 in compliance with the directive of the NLC.
“Consequently, the State Councils leadership are equally requested to collaborate for monitoring of compliance, and also upload pictorials of your level of compliance on the national secretariat platform.”
NUPENG called on all its members including distributors of petroleum products to comply completely with the strike.
