Gregory University appoints 2nd female VC


Gregory University, Uturu (GUU) Abia State has announced the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor who is incidentally the second female VC of the university as the pioneer VC was also a woman.

The new helmswoman and former Dean of the Postgraduate Institute is Prof. Celestina Njoku.

A statement from GUU signed by the deputy registrar in charge of public affairs, Mr. Sleek Ogwo on Monday made this known.

He said “Sequel to the successful completion of the tenure of Prof Augustine Uwakwe as Vice Chancellor, the Board of Trustees of Gregory University Uturu has announced his elevation to the position of Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.
In a move signalling a major administrative restructuring within the university, the Board also announced the appointment of Prof Celestina Njoku as acting Vice Chancellor.
Until her recent appointment Prof Njoku was the Dean of the School of Post Graduate Studies, a position that will now be occupied by former Dean of Environmental Science,Prof Nnamdi Ekeocha.
Addressing the university community in her maiden General Assemble as Vice Chancellor, Prof Celestina Njoku solicited for renewed support and cooperation from both academic and non academic staff members, to enable the institution attain new enviable heights in the core areas of curriculum development, research, entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer.
While acknowledging and lauding the sterling efforts of her predecessor in realizing the vision of the institution, Prof Njoku promised to sustain the tempo by “providing a conducive academic environment, a campus devoid of fear and intimidation but ruled by a high level of discipline, respect for the dignity of man and the pursuit of excellence in all ramifications.”
In a related development, management of the university has alerted the public about the nefarious activities of fraudsters who specialize in extorting people while promising to offer them direct entry admission.
A press statement signed by the acting Public Relations Officer of the institution, Ebubechi Iwuh, encouraged members of the public to visit official social media handles and the university website in order to obtain updates on developments within the school.
Part of the statement reads thus, ” The Management of Gregory University Uturu, Abia State wishes to alert the public of a fraudulent advertisement on 2024/2025 Direct Entry Admissions. Please be informed that the university is not currently admitting students for the 2024/2025 academic session through Direct Entry. Be aware that any advertisement or notification from one Dr Anita, requesting payment into an account in the name of Gregory University Uturu, is a SCAM.
