Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti on Thursday flagged off the construction of Ohafia-Arochukwu road.
The road of about 41km is one of worst and most neglected in South East Nigeria over the years.
Otti announced this on his X handle on Thursday, assuring that the project has a completion duration of 18 months.
He wrote: “Today, we flagged off the reconstruction of the 41.4 km Ohafia-Arochukwu Road. The contract has been awarded to IAC construction company Ltd, and it will last for a duration of eighteen months. The reconstruction will start from two locations: Ohafia and the boundary between Akwa Ibom and Arochukwu.
For decades, accessing Arochukwu was a daunting task, but this reconstruction will end that nightmare, bringing a new lease of life to over 60 communities. Built in the 1960s, the road was once a major economic enabler, boosting agriculture, commerce, and tourism. Sadly, it fell into disrepair, but today, we begin its revival.
The project will benefit not only Abia State but also our neighbours in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, fostering economic opportunities and connectivity. We shall continue to honour the vision and ideals of Dr. Michael Okpara aimed at restoring the limitless ambition and drive for success that once thrived along this corridor.
Permit me to specially appreciate the Abia State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Don Otumchere Oti and his team for the robust engagement with their counterparts at the Federal Ministry of Works to evaluate and review the technical details of this project. This was necessary to guarantee smooth execution and the long-term durability of the road on completion. Let me also acknowledge the honourable minister of works, His Excellency, Senator David Umahi, for his commitment and cooperation, which made today possible.”
