Ten years ago, when Yakubu Gowon Genocide Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) turned 80, I wrote him a letter through my column in Saturday Sun with exactly this headline
Reactions to it was like a conflagration of emotions.
Now he is 90, the viral load of bloodshed of genocides on his head and hands won’t let him rest until he gets enough disgrace here before facing his judgment in eternity. It pushed him to grant an interview that has ignited the most informed backlash from Chuks Iloegbunam. All thanks to Iloegbunam who has the facts, dates, actors, and more. He dished a criminal a full dose.
In that response, there are listed 11 cases of Gowon commanding Nigerian forces to bomb Biafran civilians in refugee camps, hospitals, schools, markets and at the village square like in Asaba in 1967
The anger we have against Gowon is not fighting a war, but levying genocides on civilians against the rules of war.
In the conclusion of my article 10 years ago, I informed Gowon that NOT EVERYONE THAT LIVES LONG IS FOR BLESSING.
God spared Gowon this long not because of his works, but to LET HIM KNOW THAT BLOOD OF HUMAN BEINGS DO NOT FERTILIZE A NATION INTO UNITY OR GROWTH.
Since Gowon justifies his genocides by his puerile argument of WANTING A UNITED NIGERIA, God spared him long to see the futility of his criminality.
I called him the General of Failed Ambitions
According to him, he targeted to do two things:
*Build a United Nigeria through blood of genocides. He failed in uniting Nigeria and lived long to witness his failure as Nigeria is a million times more disunited now than in the 1960s.
*To exterminate the Igbo race and other races of Biafra. They’re all still in existence. He failed in that also
God kept Gowon to be witness to the futility of his folly. Today, he has seen enough of a more and more disunited country in the past 54 years since the war ended.
Toady, we see the survived kids of the war his policy aimed to starve to death grow, exploit and spread in fame, education, expertise, wealth, achievement, etc, but I scarcely hear of his own kids that lived in opulence while he starved others dead. God is wiser than all.
I don’t want to go back to the details of his lie 3Rs, the suppression of the gains that Nigeria would have reaped from the war and many more.
The rest of the world fought wars and grew from the experiences, but Gowon’s wicked ambition and intentions denied Nigeria such benefits. That is why instead of Nigerians today seeing unity and friendship from that war, the divides keep widening, even among generations that didn’t witness it. More agitations for separation keep coming as more injustices sowed by Gowon bear more fruits.
South Africa is more united with the killer whites of apartheid than Nigerians between the Biafra and Nigeria divide.
Rwanda is consolidated into a wholesome united and bonded country, post-1994 genocide while Nigerians pull further apart due to the approach of a callous man called Yakubu Gowon that executed the sanguinary war and implemented post-war segregation policies.
We will all die, but Gowon will die in regrets as he will always have the pictures of the genocides he committed before him and have the regret of refusing to use an ample opportunity time provided him to apologize for his gross errors and seek forgiveness.
