The Chinese embassy in Ghana threw a reception late Wednesday to herald the upcoming Chinese New Year, ushering in the Year of the Snake, which will start on Jan. 29.
Hundreds of Ghanaians joined the Chinese community in Ghana for the reception, marked by musical and Chinese cultural displays, goodwill messages, and authentic Chinese cuisine.
Addressing the participants, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Tong Defa commended the Chinese nationals and Chinese enterprises in Ghana for their hard work and charitable activities, including the donations of cash and goods to local orphanages, schools, and communities to fulfill their corporate social responsibility.
“Over the past year, Chinese nationals and Chinese enterprises worked hard and made great progress, making important contributions to promoting cooperation between China and Ghana in various fields, improving local people’s livelihoods, and promoting local economic and social development,” Tong said.
China is also willing to deepen practical cooperation with African countries, including Ghana, provide support within its capacity and synergize the development agenda of African countries, said the ambassador. He stressed that the snake symbolizes life, wisdom, and good luck, wishing his compatriots good luck and happiness in the new year.
Students from the Confucius Institutes at the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast performed at the reception. At the same time, the Chinese ambassador led his embassy staff to sing a song to mark the occasion.
